A traffic stop to apprehend a dangerous driver led to a drug investigation for two Regina Police Service patrol officers on Monday night. A 24 year-old male is facing numerous charges as a result.
On Monday, October 18, 2021, at approximately 9:47 p.m., two patrol members observed a Chevy Impala travelling north on Broad Street from Saskatchewan Drive. The vehicle was estimated to be travelling approximately 90-100 km/h, passing vehicles in the narrow underpass just north of Sask Drive. Police followed and activated emergency equipment; the vehicle came to a stop at Broad Street and 7th Avenue. When the driver was advised he was under arrest for dangerous driving, he became extremely uncooperative. Once the driver was outside the vehicle, it’s alleged he assaulted both officers as they were taking him into custody. Further investigation led to a search of the vehicle where police found ammunition, spent casings, cocaine, methamphetamine, prescription drugs (tranquilizers), an expandable baton, and thousands of dollars in Canadian currency. The driver was subsequently charged in connection with this incident.
Twenty-four year-old Tyler James THORVALDSON, of Carman, Manitoba, is charged with:
- Resist arrest [129(a) CC];
- 2 X Assault of a peace officer [270(1)(a) CC];
- Possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace [88 CC];
- Possession for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine) [5(2) CDSA];
- Possession for the purpose of trafficking (Alprazolam) [5(2) CDSA];
- Possession of a scheduled substance [4(1) CDSA];
- Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5000. [355(a) CC]; and
- Operate conveyance dangerous to public [320.13(1) CC].
THORVALDSON made his first court appearance on these charges in Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.
