A man charged with assaulting a police officer in Courtenay in early 2020 has pleaded guilty to a Motor Vehicle Act charge. However, the assault charge, among others, has been stayed.
In Provincial Court in Courtenay on Nov. 25, Gabriel Y. Ocampo entered a guilty plea to a charge under the Motor Vehicle Act of driving while prohibited. For this, he was given a $600 fine and also must pay a $90 victim surcharge. He also faces a driving ban for 12 months.
He had been facing charges such as assaulting a peace officer, obstructing a police officer, failing to comply with a demand at the time of a traffic stop and breaching a probation order. Stays were entered on all of these charges.

A Crown counsel spokesperson confirmed the decision on the case was made following resolution discussions between Crown and defence counsel.
At the time of the incident, Comox Valley RCMP reported Ocampo had been arrested following a traffic stop near Crown Isle shortly after midnight on Feb. 21, 2020. He was reported to have fled the scene following an exchange with the police officer and was found with the help of a police dog.
