A Peachland man says he was assaulted in West Kelowna after trying to stop a shoplifter.
Dave Warren was waiting in his truck on Oct. 25 around 5 p.m. in a parking lot near Highway 97 and Butt Road when he spotted a man running out of the side door of a store with what appeared to be stolen items. That's when he tried to intervene.
“I stupidly got out of my truck, went around behind a neighbouring vehicle, and when the guy came within a few feet of me. I gave chase, and at that second I was flying through the air and landed with both my wrists on the ground."
Warren broke both his wrists and may require surgery. He’ll find out on Nov. 12 if he needs an operation.
“My arms have been like this (in casts) for two weeks, and I can’t get a jug of milk out of the fridge, I can’t make any of my own food, can’t drive or clean up after myself,” said Dave. “I've had to get painkillers and a prescription for T3s.”
Dave’s son Steven was working in Abbotsford at the time of the incident, but he's now returned to his family home in Peachland to help take care of his father. He said aside from his dad’s injuries, he's just happy he's okay.
“It's very unfortunate that he’s hindered physically, not being able to do stuff for himself, but it could have been a lot worse in my mind, and I'm just happy to be able to still have him at home and be able to help,” said Steven.
Although he's feeling sore and shaken up, Dave is feeling grateful for the help of his family.
“Well I can’t dress myself, I can't put my shirt over my head or do up my belt buckle, and they’ve helped me with everything, every single thing. I’m grateful for them."
A painter and carpenter by trade, Dave isn’t sure how he’ll support himself or his family, after he's had to back out of a contract that was set to have him working for the next six months, starting next week. His son Steven has set up a GoFundMe to help cover the cost of bills and everyday essentials.
West Kelowna RCMP have yet to locate the suspect, but Dave is feeling hopeful they will, as he was told by officers the suspect is known to them. The store owner also took photos of the suspect and submitted them to the authorities.
